Situated on the mighty Missouri River, the longest river in North America, the city of Omaha in the state of Nebraska is known for its rich pioneer history and delightful attractions. Omaha makes sightseeing easy with its pleasant and small-scale city center, where most places are easily explored on foot or located a short drive away. A popular stop along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, those visiting Omaha will find museums, boutique shops, cultural centers, and loyal fans of the Omaha Storm Chasers baseball team.
A favorite for locals and visitors alike, one of the best places to explore in Omaha is the historic Old Market District at the heart of the city. Wander around the 19th century brick-lined streets, now home to an assortment of restaurants, pubs, shops, live theater, art galleries, horse-drawn carriages, and more. Grab a bite to eat at one of the cafes or coffeehouses, sign up for an Omaha culinary tour, or tour a few local breweries nearby such as the Upstream Brewing Co. and Rock Bottom.
With your energy levels replenished, take your pick from one of Omaha’s unique museums. Located in a beautiful art deco building, the Durham Museum was originally a busy train station but now showcases the history of the area with a variety of permanent and rotating exhibitions. For local and modern artwork, surprise yourself and see what lies in store at the constantly changing art collection at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Admission is free. Two other close-by museums you should not miss out on include the Joslyn Art Museum and the Omaha Children’s Museum.
For those who prefer outdoor activities, stroll over to the sweeping waterfront area, where you will come across the Heartland of America Park featuring three magnificent fountains with a view of the city skyline. Visitors will also want to head over to Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge, also known as The Bob, which connects Omaha to Council Bluffs, Iowa. At over 3,000 feet long, the bridge is bustling with daily walkers, runners, and cyclists. Afterwards, check out the nearby Lewis and Clark Landing, a public park and the original landing site of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 1800s.
Other popular attraction for all ages includes the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, a massive facility with multiple exhibits including the largest indoor desert in the world at the Dome Desert, or the Lied Jungle, touted as being North America’s largest indoor rainforest. Nature lovers will not want to miss the spectacular and lush Lauritzen Gardens, a 100 acre botanical garden with an abundance of blooming flora and fauna. During the warmer months, you can even catch an event or performance here.
